Overview
CPM extends Monash Automation's Matrix, the underlying structure of the print farm, by integrating a dedicated print removal station. Completed build plates are cleared using controlled cooling and mechanical bending: linear actuators flex the plate to progressively peel the printed part free before it is returned to the printer. The final design automated print clearing and replacement with over 95% success.
Why it matters
This project closes the loop on what was previously the largest source of manual intervention in the print farm. With a 95% removal success rate, AI-powered failure detection and a human alert system, the station grows more reliable with each iteration, moving towards removing all human contact from the printing process.
Functionality
An Omron NX102 PLC with an integrated safety CPU handles emergency stops and interlocks. A vision-guided alignment loop uses a POE camera on the KUKA arm to read Aruco markers at each printer station and push positional corrections over OPC UA, letting the arm engage each plate with millimetre-level accuracy without absolute encoders.
What sets CPM apart is its process-aware removal strategy. Research for the Matrix showed that the force needed to clear a plate varies with its residual bed temperature, so the plate is cooled to a point where adhesion is reduced before bending begins, lowering the force required.
